Emily Oster Biography

Emily Oster is one of the most popular and richest American economist who was born on February 14, 1980 in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. At an event in 2007 at Ted Talk, Oster discussed the expansion of HIV in Africa using an analysis of the cost-benefit ratio to address the issue of the reason African males have been unable to change their sexual behaviors.

In her book, Expecting Better, Oster discusses the data behind common pregnancy “rules” and argues many of them are misleading. On the guideline of avoiding alcohol consumption during pregnancy, she argues that there is no evidence that (low) levels of alcohol consumption by pregnant women adversely affect their children. This claim, however, has drawn criticism from the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and others. As of March 2019, the book has sold over 100,000 copies.

Emily has the parents of Sharon M. Oster and Ray C. Fair, both economists and finance at Yale University. She was married Jesse Shapiro, also an economist, in June of 2006.

As of 2005, Oster released a thesis in the Economics Ph.D. at Harvard University, which suggested that the high proportion of women to men in China was in part due in part to Hepatitis B virus. “Hepatitis B and the Case of the Missing Women,” highlighted studies that showed that regions that had high Hep B prevalence were more likely to have greater male-to-female birth rates. Oster claimed that the factor that Hep B may result in women having male babies more frequently than females, was the reason for the majority of “missing women” in Amartya Sen’s essay from 1990, “More Than 100 Million Women Are Missing.” Oster pointed out that the introduction in 1982 of Hep B vaccine in 1982 resulted in a dramatic decline in the male-to-female ratio. Sen’s essay had linked”the “missing women” to societal discrimination against women and girls through the distribution of educational, health or food-related resources. On April 8, 2008 Oster published a work document titled “Hepatitis B Does Not Explain Male-Biased Sex Ratios in China” in which she reviews new research and demonstrates that her earlier research was not accurate.” Freakonomics creator Steven Levitt saw this as an indication of honesty.

Her second book, Cribsheet, was published in April 2019 and was a New York Times bestseller. It evaluates and reviews the research on a variety of parenting topics relating to infants and toddlers, including breastfeeding, safe sleep guidelines, sleep training, and potty training. The week of April 28, 2019, Cribsheet was also the best selling book in Washington, DC according to the Post.
